The Braves thought Thompson might be turning the corner in spring training, but instead the right-hander struggled in Triple-A.

Jacob Thompson told the Braves Sunday he is retiring.

Thompson had a really rough start Saturday, as he allowed seven runs one nine hits in 2.1 innings. His ERA was 8.78 in seven starts, and Thompson had allowed 26 earned runs in 26.2 innings.

The move was a surprise because of the progress Thompson had made in spring training. Coaches were wondering if Thompson had turned the corner, particularly after a much improved second half of the 2010 season for Double-A Mississippi.

Thompson had a 2.38 ERA in nine starts in the second half of the 2010 season. The Braves were anxious to see how the former Virginia Cavalier would handle Triple-A this year, but the results were not good.

Thompson was drafted in fifth round in 2008. Sources say Thompson has signed his retirement papers.
