Rangers Winterball Roundup – 11/12

Deglan hit a two-run homer

Surprise Saguaros catcher Kellin Deglan hit a two-run home run, his first of the Arizona Fall League campaign, on Monday afternoon. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

With only three regular-season games remaining, the Saguaros moved to within one-half game of first place after Monday's victory over Scottsdale. The division winner will earn a spot in the Arizona Fall League Championship Game this weekend.

Catcher Kellin Deglan put Surprise on top early with his two-run homer off Angels hurler Bobby Cassevah in the second inning. Deglan drew a walk later in the game, reaching base twice in four plate appearances.

Although the 20-year-old prospect has made a strong impression on scouts in the Fall League with his defensive performance, he had scuffled at the plate entering Monday's contest. Of course, Deglan has also played in just nine games. He's 6-for-32 (.188) with that home run, three walks, and 11 strikeouts.

Shortstop Hanser Alberto (.352/.390/.463 in 15 games) extended his hitting streak to eight games by going 1-for-4 with his second double. He was also hit by a pitch.

Chris McGuiness (.304/.400/.519 in 22 games) went 0-for-3, striking out once and walking once.

Dominican Winter League

No Rangers appeared in the Dominican Republic on Monday.

Venezuelan Winter League

There were no LVBP games on Monday.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

Young Rangers prospect Eduard Pinto returned to action for the first time since October 26, when he appeared as a pinch hitter for the Navegantes del Magallanes' ‘big' club in LVBP.

Now playing in Liga Paralela with the Navegantes, Pinto batted leadoff and doubled for his only hit in four trips on Monday.

The 18-year-old (as of late October) outfielder turned some heads this past regular season when he paced the Dominican Summer League with a .396 batting average in 56 games. He went 2-for-7 with a double over six LVBP games––against much older competition–-for Magallanes.

DH Elio Castillo, Pinto's DSL Rangers teammate during the regular season, played for Magallanes and went hitless in four at-bats.

Caimanes left fielder and leadoff man Diego Cedeno (.347/.448/.429) went 2-for-4. He was caught stealing once.

Teodoro Martinez appeared as a late-inning pinch-hitter for Aragua and walked in his only plate appearance.

Caracas right-hander Richard Alvarez (1.98 ERA/.204 BAA) earned his fifth victory in as many decisions. The Venezuelan hurler surrendered three runs on six hits in five innings, walking one and striking out two.

Shortstop Santiago Chirino also went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Caracas club. He committed an error in the field, as well.

First baseman Jhonny Gomez (1/3, SF) singled, brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, and committed one of five Tiburones errors.

Mexican Pacific League

The Mexican Pacific League was off on Monday.

Puerto Rican Winter League

The Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente was also dark on Monday.

Australian Baseball League

As usual, the Australian Baseball League is taking the midweek off before returning to action on Friday.
