Stanford's Wilson Expected Out For 6 Weeks

Stanford slugging junior right fielder Austin Wilson had a stress reaction in his right elbow that could sideline him for up to 8 weeks.

Austin Wilson and Mark Appel are Stanford's two projected first round picks for this June draft and their fortunes couldn't have been any different of late. Appel had arguably the best outing of his career on Friday versus Fresno State while Wilson has been sidelined since last week's season-opening series against Rice.

Stanford has acknowledged that Wilson's seemingly minor injury is a stress reaction at the top of his right elbow and his status has shifted from day-to-day to week-to-week. Two sources confirmed today that Wilson is expected to be out for six weeks, giving a four to eight week timeline, including the week he's already missed.

This is a tough break for Wilson to be off the field as clubs are getting early looks at amateur players and setting their priorities for later in the draft season. Scouts have raised questions about Wilson's approach at the plate and his hitting mechanics as his tools have been considered first-round quality but his results haven't always been.

Wilson reportedly turned down a seven figure offer from the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2010 draft as a 12th round choice out of Los Angeles-area high school Harvard-Westlake. Recommended Stories
