McNeil signed on Wednesday

With their 12th round pick in the 2013 First-Year player draft, the Mets selected shortstop Jeff McNeil from Long Beach State. In this exclusive Draft Day Q&A, he talks about being drafted by the organization, his defensive game, who he would compare his game to at the big league level, and more.

InsidePitchMagazine.com: Tell us what it feels like to be selected by the Mets.

Jeff McNeil: Incredible. The opportunity to play professional baseball is something I have always wanted to do.

InsidePitchMagazine.com: Talk about your game a little bit. What type of player are you and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Mets?

McNeil: I'm scrappy. I like to put the ball in play and use my speed. I let my athleticism do the work.

InsidePitchMagazine.com: What are your strengths and your weaknesses?

McNeil: My strengths are my speed and putting the ball in play. I'm a contact hitter and have the ability to play all over. My weaknesses are hitting with power and my size. Hopefully I will be able to improve on my weaknesses when I begin working with the Mets.

InsidePitchMagazine.com: How about your defensive game?

McNeil: I played four different positions in college, and I am willing to play wherever the Mets need me.

InsidePitchMagazine.com: Were you expecting to be drafted by the Mets or were you surprised when they selected you?

McNeil: I was a little bit surprised. I expected to be picked up by the Tigers, but the Mets got me first.

InsidePitchMagazine.com: Do you see yourself staying at the same position or do you think you'll be moved to another position?

McNeil: I was drafted as a shortstop, but have the ability to move if they need me to. I'll do what ever is best for the team.

InsidePitchMagazine.com: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

McNeil: [Wednesday], actually. I just signed my professional contract.

InsidePitchMagazine.com: Who was your favorite team and player growing up?

McNeil: My favorite team was definitely the Dodgers. I have been a huge Dodgers fan my entire life. I have always liked Derek Jeter because he plays shortstop.
