MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: April 10

The Quack

Long day on the diamond as two games go into extras. While one of the oldest players in AAA, Jeff Francouer, helped lead El Paso to a win, the youngest player in the MidWest League, Franmil Reyes, hit his first home run of the year.

Chihuahuas 5 - Tacoma Rainiers 2

Key Statistics LF Jeff Francoeur 2-5, 2B, RS, RBI; 1B Kyle Blanks 1-4, 2B, RS; RHP Keyvius Sampson 4 IP, 4 H, ER, 3 BB, 3 K; RHP Kevin Quackenbush 1 IP (S, 3).

Prospect Watch: Appearing in back-to- back games for the first time this closer Kevin Quackenbush had his first one-two-three inning of the year. After four games Quackenbush is holding batters to a meager .125 batting average. That is only slightly better than the .151 batting average he held AA hitters to last year.

Missions 5 – Springfield Cardinals 8 (14 innings)

Key Statistics CF Travis Jankowski 3-7, SB (2); 2B Cory Spangenberg 2-7, RS, SB (2); RHP Josh Geer 5 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 K; RHP Johnny Barbato 2 IP, K.

Prospect Watch: Sticking with the closer prospect watch, the Mission's closer Johnny Barbato had another outstanding outing. After the lead was blown, Barbato came into the game and proceeded to retire all six batters in order. On the year Barbato has only allowed two hits in six innings, holding batters to a .105 average. Possibly more exciting for Padres' fans is that despite being a right-handed pitcher, he has yet to allow a hit to lefties, while striking out five of the nine lefties he has faced.

Storm 5 – Lancaster Jethawks 6 (11 innings)

Key Statistics SS Stephen Carmon 1-2, 3B, 2 RBI, BB; Corey Adamson 1-6, HR (1) RHP Colin Rea 4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K; RHP Adam Cimber 2 IP, H.

Prospect Watch: Storm closer Trevor Gott picked up his first loss of the season, after giving up his first run of the season. Unfortunately, the loss was self inflicted, as Gott threw a wild pitch with a runner on second and one out. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly and that was the end. While Gott is the closer right now it remains to be seen if he will continue to be that role with the team as five pitchers on the current roster had multiple saves in the organization last year including MWL All –star Roman Madrid who is currently on the DL.

TinCaps 5 – Kane County Cougars 7

Key Statistics CF Mallex Smith 2-5, SB (9); RF Franmil Reyes 1-4, HR (1), C Ryan Miller 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI; RHP Walker Weickel 2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K .

Prospect Watch: TinCaps' closer Nic Muntz didn't get into the game, but has struck out seven, allowing only two baserunners, over 4.2 innings… Franmil Reyes is currently the youngest player in the MWL att just 18 years of age, and is extremely raw. However, just like a majority of the team, despite being young he has a world of talent. After amassing just three singles through the first five games, Reyes crushed a home run to left.
