Three Braves named to All-Star roster

Here's the scoop on Atlanta's All-Star contingent.

The Braves will send three players to Minnesota for the All-Star Game next week, and it’s possible a fourth member of the roster could join the trio headed north.

Craig Kimbrel is headed to his fourth straight All-Star game, while Freddie Freeman is headed to his second straight. Julio Teheran will make his first trip to the Mid-Summer’s Classic.

Outfielder Justin Upton will be one of five players on the Final Vote ballot. He’ll battle Colorado’s Justin Morneau, Washington’s Anthony Rendon, Chicago’s Anthony Rizzo and Miami’s Casey McGehee in the balloting that will conclude Thursday, July 10.

Kimbrel is having another outstanding season. He’s got a 2.04 earned run average in 37 games with 27 saves. He’s allowed eight earned runs on 18 hits in 35.1 innings, with 15 walks and 60 strikeouts. Kimbrel is tied with Francisco Rodriquez for the major league lead in saves.

Freeman is hitting .294 with 13 home runs, 47 RBI, 25 doubles and a .386 on base percentage. His doubles total is good enough to be in a tie for ninth in the majors in that category. Freeman’s OBP is the 15th best in baseball.

Teheran is seventh in the majors (fifth in the NL) with an ERA of 2.29. He’s 8-5 in 18 starts. Teheran has allowed 32 earned runs on 94 hits in 126 innings pitched, with only 26 walks and 108 strikeouts.

Upton is hitting .273 with 17 home runs and 50 runs batted in. He’s got the third most home runs in the NL among outfielders. Go to to place a vote for Upton to be on the All-Star team.
