Former Brave Abernathy Dies

Former Braves pitcher Ted Abernathy died last week at the age of 71.

A member of the Braves fraternity passed away last week as Ted Abernathy died at the age of 71 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Abernathy pitched for the Braves in their first season in Atlanta, 1966. The Braves acquired him in May of that season from the Cubs for infielder Lee Thomas. Abernathy pitched in 38 games for Atlanta and went 4-4 with a 3.86 ERA and four saves.

The Braves allowed Abernathy to go to Cincinnati the next season where he saved 28 games. His best season was in 1965 when he saved 31 games for Chicago. Overall in his career, Abernathy, who first debuted in 1955, appeared in 681 games and picked up 148 saves. He had a 63-69 career record and 3.46 ERA.

Abernathy was a sidearmer who also played for the Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals, and Kansas City Royals.
