Former Major Leaguer Mahler Dies

Former major league pitcher Rick Mahler died Wednesday of an apparent heart attack at the age of 51.

Mahler, who spent 11 seasons pitching for the Atlanta Braves, was a minor league pitching coach with the New York Mets last season and was slated to hold the same position this year with Single-A St. Lucie.

Mahler pitched 13 years in the league and compiled a 96-111 mark to go along with a 3.99 earned run average. He enjoyed his best season in 1985 with the Braves when he went 17-15. However, he led the league with 18 losses the following season.

Mahler, who is survived by his wife and five children, was also a member of the 1990 World Series champion Cincinnati Reds.
