The Braves have made their first trade of the offseason.
Report has Braves getting Chavez for Soriano
The Braves had been trying to trade Soriano after he accepted arbitration Monday night. After signing Billy Wagner and Takashi Saito last week, there was no room for the veteran Soriano, who saved 27 games for the Braves in 2009.
Chavez just turned 26 in August. He just finished his first full season in the big leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Chavez was traded after the season to Tampa Bay for second baseman Akinoria Iwamura.
The right-hander pitched in 73 games for the Pirates last season, posting an ERA of 4.01. Chavez allowed 69 hits in 67.1 innings, with 22 walks, and 47 strikeouts.
Chavez throws a fastball in the mid-90s, along with a very good changeup. He also features a slider.
The Braves will pair Chavez in the bullpen with Peter Moylan and Kris Medlen, two other right-handed relievers.
