The Braves have added some insurance for Triple-A Gwinnett.

The Braves have signed free agent catcher J.R. House to a minor league contract.

House played last season with the Royals Triple-A club in Omaha. He hit .251 with 9 home runs and 53 RBI in 505 at bats.

House will compete for playing time in Gwinnett with J.C. Boscan and Orlando Mercado. Clint Sammons is penciled in as the potential starter for the G-Braves.

House was a top draft pick in the 1999 draft by the Pirates. He made the big leagues with Pittsburgh in 2003 and played in one game, followed by five games the next season in the majors.

After House sat out the 2005 season, he got back to the big leagues for four games the next season with Houston. House played 19 games with Baltimore in 2007, and then went back to Houston for three games in 2008.

Overall in 32 major league games, House has hit .167 in 60 at bats, with 3 home runs and 4 RBI.

House can also play first base and third base.
