The Braves defense failed them Friday in game one of the series against the Mets.
Friday's minor league report
Mississippi third baseman Donell Linares doubled in Willie Cabrera in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Braves a 5-4 victory over Mobile. The Bay Bears scored four runs in the top of the second off Mississippi starter Richard Sullivan, and then the Braves bounced back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning. Both bullpens did the job until the Braves broke the 4-4 tie in the 10th inning. Michael Broadway (1.1 innings), Brett Butts (1.2 innings), and Stephen Marek (1.0 inning) held Mobile scoreless in four relief innings. Marek got the win and kept his ERA at 0.00 for the season. The Braves (9-6) have now won three in a row and lead Jacksonville by a half game in the Southern League's South Division. Mississippi starts a five-game series in Montgomery Saturday night with Mike Minor (0-1, 5.06) scheduled to start for the Braves.
Myrtle Beach got some late run production to beat Kinston 6-5 Friday at Grainger Stadium to snap a seven-game losing streak. The Pelicans scored two runs in the seventh inning and three runs in the eighth inning off the Indians' bullpen. Gerardo Avila hit a two-run home run in the eighth, his second of the season. Matt Crim pitched 4.1 innings in relief and gave up only one run to get the victory. Jaye Chapman got the final four outs to pick up his second save of the season. Chapman's ERA on the season is 1.23. The series continues Saturday night at 7:00 as right-hander Randall Delgado (0-1, 2.16) goes for the Pelicans.
The Rome Braves lost in 10 innings to Kannapolis Friday night 3-2 at State Mutual Stadium. Jordan Kreke drove in L.V. Ware in the eighth inning to tie the game at two, but Kannapolis got the lead back in the 10th inning on an Ian Gac single. Julio Surinach (0-1) took the loss for the Braves. Chris Masters got the start for Rome and allowed two runs on four hits in six innings. Masters' ERA is now 1.00. The Braves (7-9) start a four-game series in Charleston on Saturday night. Julio Teheran (1-1, 1.20) is scheduled to start for Rome.
