| Biography: |
While Billy Beane was an undistinguished major league player, he has left an indelible impact on the game of baseball during his tenure as the general manager of the Oakland A's.
Beane, a former first round pick of the New York Mets in 1980, played in 148 major league games over six seasons. He had a career batting average of .219 and he had three career homeruns.
Beane retired from his playing days after winning a World Series ring as a back-up outfielder on the Oakland A's in 1989. He then joined the Sandy Alderson-led Oakland A's front office. Seven years later, he was the general manager.
Beane was made famous by the book "Moneyball" (authored by Michael Lewis) which chronicled his and his front office's efforts to use statistical data to evaluate players in an attempt to target players more efficently. It also touched on the great success Beane has had in creating winning teams in Oakland despite a below average payroll.
When Beane took over the A's, Oakland was in the midst of a string of losing seasons. Since 1999, the A's have won more than 87 games in each season. They have reached the playoffs four times and have won the second most regular season games of any team in baseball. Throughout that time, Beane has used his farm system to either replace stars who have left for free agent earnings or to trade for big name stars at the trade deadline.
