Braves win but offense still sputters

The numbers continue to look bleak, but the Braves did win Wednesday night.

After the 3-2 victory over the Dodgers on Wednesday, the Braves are now 61-59 – They are 5 games out of first place in the NL East – 2 games up on Miami. In the Wildcard Race, Atlanta is 2.5 games back of the second place Cardinals. The Giants are in third place, two games up on the Braves. The Reds are a game back of Atlanta and Miami is two games back.

The Braves are now 44-52 since the 17-7 start to the season. They are 3-8 in August and 9-16 since the All-Star Break. Atlanta is now 19-19 in one-run games.

Ervin Santana had another quality start, his ninth in his last 11 starts. He allowed two runs on eight hits in six innings, with two walks and nine strikeouts. Santana is now 12-6 on the season with an ERA of 3.66. He’s now made 23 starts on the season. In his last 11 starts – since June 17 – Santana is 7-3 with an ERA of 3.21, 68 hits allowed in 73 innings pitched, 26 earned runs, 22 walks, 70 strikeouts)

Here are some of the batting averages in the month of August:

Freddie Freeman – 18-for-46 (.391) with 1 HR and 5 RBI

Jason Heyward – 14-for-43 (.326) with 0 HR and 3 RBI – As the 5th place hitter, Heyward hit .292 with one home runs and 18 RBI in 154 at bats. As the leadoff hitter, Heyward has now hit .254 with eight home runs and 27 RBI.

Chris Johnson – 11-for-46 (.239) with no home runs and 3 RBI.

Tommy La Stella – 8-for-36 (.222) with one home run and eight RBI.

Justin Upton – 9-for-41 (.220) with two home runs and eight RBI.

Evan Gattis – 9-for-43 (.209) with no home runs and three RBI. Since Gattis came off the disabled list, he’s hit .229 (16-for-70) with one home run and six RBI.

Andrelton Simmons – 2-for-16 (.125) with no home runs and four RBI.

B.J. Upton -4-for-37 (.108) with two home runs and three RBI. Upton has not had a multi-hit game in his 10 games this month. He has struck out 14 times in August and still leads the NL with 149.

The Braves have scored only 29 runs in the 11 games during August (2.64 runs per game). They’ve scored more than three runs only one time this month. Since the All-Star Break, the Braves have scored four or more runs only eight times in 25 games.
