Yunel Escobar placed on the disabled list
Atlanta promoted shortstop Brandon Hicks from Triple-A Gwinnett to replace Escobar on the big league roster. Hicks will see time at shortstop with Omar Infante, who started there the last three games in the series against the Astros and went 6-for-12 at the plate.
Hicks was drafted in the third round of the 2007 draft out of Texas A&M. He hit only .179 with one home run and six RBI in 84 at bats this season for Triple-A Gwinnett. Hicks has a .239 lifetime batting average in his pro career.
While his offense has always been in question, Hicks has been ready defensively to play in the major leagues for a while. Expect manager Bobby Cox to get Hicks in the lineup occasionally to provide stellar defense.
Escobar has struggled this season with a .215 batting average, no home runs, and eight runs batted in. The Braves were worried about being a player short going into the nine-game road trip that starts Tuesday in Washington.
